Training

We firmly believe that training isn’t optional—it’s essential. Addressing behavior issues head‑on and early is one of the most effective ways to keep dogs out of shelters and in their forever homes.

Many of the dogs we rescue come with baggage—confusion, fear, bad habits, or simply a lack of structure. Training gives them clarity, confidence, and communication. More importantly, it gives adopters the tools they need to succeed long‑term.

There is no single “right” way to train every dog. Just like people, dogs learn differently. That’s why we partner with trusted, professional trainers who use a range of ethical approaches.

Behavioral Analysis: Marauder K9

Marauder K9 - Southern Pines is our go‑to for initial behavior evaluations as well as more complex cases. They complete the majority of our behavior assessments, and are highly equipped for boarding dogs with behavioral or medical conditions. Space is limited, so we recommend reaching out early.

Training Philosophy: Balanced Training

Balanced training utilizes operant conditioning, combining rewards and fair, appropriate corrections to achieve clear communication and reliable behavior. When done correctly, it minimizes confusion, reduces conflict between dog and handler, and sets both up for long‑term success.

Services Offered:

Private Training
One‑hour, one‑on‑one sessions focused on your specific goals or challenges. There is no “one size fits all” approach—some dogs need more reps, some need more clarity.

Consulting & Behavior Evaluations
Clients complete a detailed Canine Consultation Questionnaire, followed by an in‑person evaluation.

Group & Family‑Friendly Training: K9 Foundation

Well‑Rounded Training for Dogs and  Humans

K9 Foundation is one of our trusted training partners, offering group classes and private instruction designed to support dogs at every stage—from puppies to advanced obedience and beyond. Led by an exceptionally credentialed team, K9 Foundation focuses on building strong relationships, clear communication, and confident, reliable behavior.

This is a great option for families looking to strengthen their bond with their dog while working on real‑world skills in a supportive environment.

Force‑Free Option: Free To Be Dog

Free To Be Dog offers force‑free training, focusing exclusively on positive reinforcement. This approach avoids corrections and prioritizes rewards‑based learning.

Please note: this option may not be the right fit for every dog—especially those with more complex behavioral needs—but it can be a good choice for certain households and personalities.

A Note from RADAR

Training is not about perfection—it’s about consistency, patience, and communication. The right training plan and early intervention can make all the difference in ensuring a life-long home.

We’re always happy to help adopters and fosters choose the best training path for their dog. If you have questions or need guidance, reach out—we’ve got your six.
